Exploring the Traditional Fishing Communities of Goa

Goa is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and fishing is a popular activity among the locals & tourists. There are many fishing villages along the coast of Goa where you can experience traditional fishing methods and even go on fishing expedition. There are several places in Goa where you can go for fishing including beaches, rivers, backwaters.

The occupation of fishing has been a traditional way of life in Goa for centuries. Goan fishermen have been plying their trade for generations, using traditional methods and techniques to catch fish in the Arabian Sea.

Some of the popular fishing spots in Goa include Baga Beach, Zuari river, Chapora river etc. Goa has a rich tradition of fishing, and it's been an important occupation for the local communities for centuries.

Fishing in Goa is not just a means of livelihood, it is also a way of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the state. The fishermen of Goa are known for their unique techniques and skills, which have been passed down from one generation to the next.

Fishing in Goa is done in a myriad of ways. Many Goans have grown up learning to catch fish with their bare hands during the summer where fishes gather in shallow waters.

The traditional fishing methods in Goa include both inland and marine fishing techniques. Inland fishing is primarily alone in the state's rivers and backwaters, while marine fishing is carried along the coast.

Though huge trawlers and mechanisation have largely replaced traditional methods of fishing, many people still rely on local fishing communities for their catch.

These are the traditional methods of fishing

Ramponn refers to a method where fishermen use a large net, which are stretched across the beach with the help of 20-25 people. The net is then dragged into the sea, and fish are caught in the process. This method is mostly used for catching larger fish like Mackerel, Sardines, pomfret etc.







Kaatale- here the area where the fish is caught is called as hazna. According to the length of net the bamboo sticks are placed in shallow waters along the river. Local people set up these traps and leave them in a place for several hours or overnight allowing fish to swim into it. The fishermen then retrieves the trap, often with a good catch of fish.

Goravop refers to a nylon string with a hook is tied to a wooden or bamboo stick. The hook usually depends on what kind of a fish one want to catch.

Zaali is another way of local fishing method. Zaali is a type of handmade instrument where the people using a bamboo and net make the instrument. The bamboo is shaped in a round/ circular shape and for the it the net is attached. The fishermen then takes the zaali and walks in the shallow water where there are more chances of having a large catch of fishes. The local people know exactly where the fish is.



Pageel is another method where a person goes in the water at a particular point along with a net. The person throws a circular net into the water and pulls it back in to catch fish. It requires skill and precision to throw the net correctly and capture fish.

These are some of the fishing techniques which are been introduced to me by John Rodrigues, who is a fisherman by profession. He is a very jolly and a charming person He has been working as a fisherman for over 20 years.



The traditional occupation of fishing has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including overfishing, pollution, and climate change. However, many Goan fishermen are adapting to these challenges by adopting sustainable fishing practices and using modern technology to improve their catch.

Besides these traditional methods Goa's fishermen also use modern equipment like motorized boats and fish finder to improve their catch. However, traditional part of Goa's fishing industry and many fishermen still rely on these methods to make a living.
